Family Creek Portrait

Behind the Scenes: Bringing a Custom Family Creek Portrait to Life
Every custom painting tells a story, but there is something extra special about capturing a family's favorite memory in paint. I recently wrapped up a commission that was an absolute joy to create: a 24x30-inch custom acrylic canvas featuring a family standing right in the clear, cool water of their favorite creek, surrounded by vibrant tiger lilies, lush greenery, and a gentle deer looking on from the woods.
Here is a step-by-step look into how this piece came together from initial concept to the final touch.
Step 1: Digital Concept & Sketching The process started with reference photos sent directly by the client. Using these photos, I brought everything together into a digital draft on my tablet. This stage allows me to nail down the composition, position the figures naturally in the stream, and map out background elements like the cascading waterfall, dense tree canopy, and foreground blooms before touching paint to canvas.
Step 2: Canvas Transfer via Grid Method Once the digital layout was set, it was time to scale it up. I prepared the 24x30 canvas using the traditional grid method—drawing precise grid lines over both the sketch and the canvas to ensure every proportional detail of the figures, landscape, and wildlife transferred accurately.
Step 3: Laying the Groundwork with an Underpainting Before adding full color, I painted a tonal monochromatic underpainting (imprimatura). Working in warm, earthy tones helped establish the light source, deep shadows, and overall value structure of the entire composition. I shared this stage with the client to make sure they loved the direction, layout, and values before moving forward.
Step 4: Building Depth from Back to Front With the client’s green light, the full color process began. I always prefer working from back to front to build realistic depth:
Background: Layered deep mossy greens, sunlight breaking through the leafy canopy, and soft muted foliage.
Midground: Painted the flowing creek water, rock ledges, foaming waterfall, and the quiet deer standing along the bank.
Foreground: Rendered the family standing directly in the stream, focusing on skin tones, clothing details, and water reflections, along with vivid orange tiger lilies blooming in the corner.
Step 5: The Final Touches To frame the memory and give the canvas a polished, elegant finish, I completed the piece with a crisp black and gold border along the outer edges.
Custom commissions like this mean so much because they turn a cherished personal place into a lasting piece of art.
